Quote | "Mom always said,'You can't say shit until you've been through it.' I guess everyone gets a free pass at this point." |
History | Ivan's parents were farmers who lived relatively close to a coastal town, and even though his life was mostly spent on land, the boy was utterly fixated on the ocean from the first time he was old enough to accompany his parents to town. As he got older, he would look forward to the trips to the sea, and he would often explore the town with his Mudbray following behind. He didn't have much of a want to go on a "Pokemon journey," but he did like the idea of travelling around once he could afford to. Once his parents gave him the go ahead, the young boy took off towards the coastal town and hopped onto the first boat that went somewhere. It was here that he had some of his first independent battles with people he didn't know, and even if he wasn't the best at it, he and Demeter had a fun time. They ended up boat hopping for a while before he finally decided to try out travelling on land. They saw the sights and met new people, but it wasn't quite the same as the port towns and lovely skies that stretched beyond the horizon. Demeter was his best friend, and because of this, he didn't have a particular want or need to catch more Pokemon. Though, he did end up recruiting Pokemon who weren't into battling and sent them to live and help his parents around the house. He eventually returned to boating where he started taking up odd jobs near docks, and with Demeter's strength added in, they were able to start working on larger boats that didn't mind the Mudbray hanging around. Unfortunately, there came a time where she evolved, and only very specific boats could handle the heavy Mudsdale. He ended up having to leave her in her Pokeball for long periods of time, and he knew he couldn't keep doing that to her while he got to enjoy the freedom of being on the sea. It didn't make the decision any easier to leave her on his family's farm, but her eyes were so much brighter the next time he got to visit her. With Demeter living a much happier life, he was able to better enjoy his own. He made friends and acquaintances across multiple ports, and while some people thought it was strange that he didn't have a Pokemon, most understood the situation he had been in. It was better for a Mudsdale to have open space and room to run in. Unfortunately, this wasn't to last. A few years after this arrangement had been made, someone broke into his parent's home, stole Demeter's Pokeball with her in it and several of the Pokemon he had sent to help, and his parents had died in the conflict. Whoever had done this had completely disappeared, and despite the police getting called in to investigate, there were no leads. No one been able to contact him due to lack of cell service in the middle of the ocean, so he didn't find out until he came home, and found the police tape. It seemed like the intended target had been Demeter; the strong Mudsdale was a perfect working animal or rare battling companion. It was likely his parents had tried protecting her, but they had been overpowered and shot. The loss struck him hard. It felt like it was his fault that everyone had been put in that position. If only he hadn't been so selfish as to choose the one job Demeter couldn't accompany him on and kept him away from home for weeks or even months. Even though he had a fair amount of support in his grief, it didn't change his mind on one matter. He wasn't going to get any other Pokemon. He obviously wasn't suited for taking care of other beings given that his selfish decisions had killed his family. He ended up spending more and more time away from home, and he took up habits that he wasn't really proud of. But they helped him forget his guilt for a time. The people he worked with noticed the change, and several of them thought he was finally enjoying life instead of being such a prude. He teetered on the line of indulging too much multiple times, and it took multiple things to snap him out of it. One of his closest friends, since Demeter's loss tried sitting him down to have an intervention, but words didn't really mean much to him when night closed in. He got overconfident in his ability to walk on a boat while inebriated, and he nearly got knocked overboard when a bad storm hit. While that would have given him pause on the matter, the thing that finally snapped him out of it was that someone else had fallen, and his shoddy coordination nearly cost them their life. The other man was going to slip right off the railing, and it took Ivan far too much concentration to be able to grab him and yank him back on board. The double near miss snapped something back into place, and while he still indulged in drink every now and then, he severely cut back. Instead, he focused his time on learning more about navigation and how to run things when machines couldn't handle it all, and he cut out the acquaintances that had enabled the worst of his old hobbies. His life finally started to look up again, and not in the shallow, barely duct-taped together way. He didn't think anything much of a sickness spreading on the mainland, and it wasn't until the boat had to make an emergency dock to potentially pick up evacuees that things started to hammer in. Pokemon and humans were getting sick and dying at an alarming rate, but that wasn't the part that was driving people to hysteria. It was the fact that the Pokemon would then get back up and start attacking their former allies with a mindless, ravenous hunger. Often, a sickened Pokemon would start to show signs of this aggression before they passed, and they would bite anyone or anything nearby which would spread the illness even further. Unfortunately, they had been near the end of a very long trip, so the supplies on the boat weren't nearly enough to support the lives of the people already on board and all the people they were supposed to pick up. The good news was that the town was holding up decently well against the undead, so it was decided that they could use the ship as an escape route if needed. They started to move supplies over to the ship, and for a little while, things were okay. Ivan didn't know what happened to cause the fall, but he was in a warehouse trying to move crates with Jonas when the alarm went up. Jonas left two of his Pokemon with Ivan before running off with the other two to check their original exit. When he heard gunshots, Ivan started backing away from where Jonas had disappeared. The two Pokemon meant to guard him glared at him before running towards danger, and Ivan couldn't bring himself to follow. The shotgun in his hand was heavy, and while he could use it, the fear of the undead made his decision for him. He bolted for a window, opened it, and crawled out. Not much longer, he could hear screaming, and he just kept running. He ended up getting swept up in a crowd of people all scrambling to the boat, and he had to keep moving in order to not get trampled. His work friends spotted him in the crowd, and they all but rushed him on board. There was so much going on that he didn't hear the order. No Pokemon were allowed on board. The other sailors didn't bother to shake him down since they already knew he didn't have any Pokemon, and since Jonas wasn't with him, they assumed that none of the other's Pokemon were around. Other people weren't so lucky as those with Pokemon had to make the choice to abandon them or stay and likely die. The undead started to completely overrun the town, and that caused the captain to steer the boat away from land without everyone. Ivan had come back out, and when he noticed some people straight up swimming after the boat, he climbed down and helped as many on board as he could. Some of the swimmers couldn't catch up, and even others died as infected or undead water types went after easy food. The screams of the damned shook him deeply, but he tried not to think on it too much. That was set back when he later found out about the no Pokemon order, and he argued with several of his coworkers over the matter. Some were equally upset, but they thought it had been for the best. The majority had ruled no one wanted to risk getting killed because of sick Pokemon on board. After the stressful day, he went to the room he had designated as "his" and attempted to sleep. This was when he found something hiding in one of the pockets of the coat that he hadn't put there. A small Joltik looked at him with fearful eyes, and he was again confronted with the sins of the boat. Would it be wrong to hide a single Pokemon from the others and potentially put them in danger? Or would the greater sin be letting someone die for no reason? He couldn't kill the Pokemon, so he let her hide on him or in his room. It felt awkward calling the small creature by her species name, so for the time, he just called her "Sparky." He was aware of how uncreative the name was, but she didn't mind it, and since she wasn't his, he didn't feel right giving her a proper name. He worried about keeping this secret, but soon it would be the last thing on his mind. Not long afterwards, a fog set in and people started to see things. Things that couldn't possibly exist, or they would suddenly see things as others. At first it was disturbing but ultimately harmless. Then people started to die from these illusions; sometimes they couldn't see a dangerous situation right in front of them, and other times they would attack another person while thinking they were some hideous monster. Those who knew how to run the ship started dropping like flies, as if there was something targeting them specifically. Unease and mistrust ran rampant amongst the survivors causing them to isolate even more. Ivan, once a very social being, found this extremely difficult to adjust to. Some of the survivors resented him because he was one of the shipworkers and it was obviously their fault everyone was in this situation, and his surviving coworkers started getting paranoid of each other and him. The captain most of all distrusted him, and refused to even let Ivan get near the controls of the ship. Sparky probably kept him alive through this because he couldn't leave her alone on this hellish boat, and there were even a few times where she zapped him out of a dangerous situation that he just didn't see. It wasn't until the captain himself died that the fog started to lift. His death had been brutal, but by this point, each death that wasn't a suicide had been ramping up in terms of brutality. His body was simply moved out of the control room, and one of the other survivors asked him if he could dock the boat. On the horizon, the survivor thought he could see a town on the shore. Ivan directed the boat in that direction, and tried to figure out where the hell they were. The survivor made sure that no one disturbed him, and once he was sure they were near Driftveil, he realized that they couldn't go for the easy dock they could see. The PWT would probably have powerful Pokemon there, and if they had turned undead, there was no way the weakened survivors could survive that. Instead he went past it towards the town proper. There was some pushback from the other survivors for that decision, but ultimately, they found a community that seemed like it was actually managing well in the apocalypse. The main leader, after some discussion with his co-leaders, decided they could stay and let the people who survived the evacuation ship recover. They had the supplies for the surge of new people, and they couldn't turn out such a ragged looking bunch. The sins of the people on the boat were not spilled, but the resentment and guilt still simmered. They've only been in their new home for a week, and while Ivan is hoping things will turn out okay, a part of him feels like their horror isn't over yet. |
Accent | He swears like a sailor and has given up trying to tame it in front of others. |
Appearance | Ivan is a shorter man who once looked the part of a sailor perfectly. After the events on the evacuation ship, however, he has lost a fair amount of weight that a week's worth of care hasn't fixed. He has thrown out the clothing he wore on the ship except for a navy blue wool coat that he kept for sentimental and practical reasons, and due to it still being winter, he keeps it on most of the time. Under this, he now wears a thick turtleneck red sweater and beige canvas pants that haven't seen much wear yet. Newish boots with a good grip were also given to him and he makes use of them. Hair is moderate length and a little messy, and while he tries to keep somewhat clean shaven, he tends to have some stubble. The haunted and fearful air he had on the ship has started to dissipate a little from his dark blue eyes, and he tries to keep something of an optimistic air with sarcasm. |
Religion | He's not really religious, but he is very familiar with superstitions and doesn't take unneeded risks involving them. (Like, don't mess with ouija boards because even the people who do believe in that stuff say don't mess with it). |
Personality | -Level-headed In serious situations, he can keep himself together. Even when he ran, he didn't run in a blind panic. -Sarcastic Defaults to sarcasm as a form of humor and interacting with others. Unfortunately, he might rib someone too hard and actually hurt them. Will apologize if he realizes it, but doesn't always realize it. -Decent leadership abilities He was sort of in training to being the next captain before everything happened. As it was, he was still fairly high up the chain of command. -Massive levels of guilt Regrets not staying with his friends that died His selfishness keeps killing other people -Plays on the safe side of things constantly Has been called a coward for this -Social Before all this, Ivan was someone who liked talking and interacting with people. However, there weren't many that got super close to him to know his tragedies and secrets -Cautiously optimistic The saying goes "Hope for the best; prepare for the worst" and that sums up his feelings on life. He's been burnt too many times to be unendingly optimistic. -Bitter Despite trying to keep good relationships going, he is extremely unhappy with the decisions his own friends and workmates made. He doesn't feel he has much of a right to call them out on it because he didn't suffer like other people did, and he even benefitted from it. So instead, he ended up distancing himself from the rest of the people he once knew. It was even worse when a fair chunk of them just died, so he didn't even get to have some form of closure over it. |
Affiliations | Jonas- His best friend before the epidemic. His probable death weighs on Ivan, and to this day he is upset with himself for running when he should have stayed. -Lucent- While on the boat, Ivan thought this guy was a decent friend, but the moment they set foot in Driftveil, the guy won't even give him the time of day anymore. Ivan has started to wonder if he had been befriended only because of what he could offer in terms of running the boat. -Other evac survivors run by other people- tbd |
User Notes | -The outfit is 100% based on that one sailor joke -Exact events on the ship were being caused by something specific, but Ivan doesn't know what it was. Different people saw and experienced different things, but the end result was a large number of people dying because of it. -Mudsdale sprite from the Sun and Moon Smogon Spriting project |

Quote | "So sick of wasting all my time How in God's name did I survive? I need a little sympathy Disarm my insecurities." |
History | Jayce's early life was fairly average for a Unovan child. His parents cared for him and his younger brother, and when he turned ten, he took his Rowlet friend as his starter and traveled with his best human friend, Terry. Life was full of adventure, and with his Pokemon and his friend by his side, he felt as if he could take on the world. Then Pokemon started getting sick and turning on their trainers, and his idyllic life turned into a nightmare. His parents called for him to come home immediately, and, fearing for the worst, he traveled back as quickly as possible. Towns and cities were either masses of chaos or eerily quiet, but thankfully, no one payed much attention to the young kid. There were a few incidents where people tried to hold him back, but he would sneak out at night when they weren't looking. By the time he made it home, he found that it was too late. The door was barely hanging on by a hinge, and there was a large Conkeldurr standing in the entryway. There was blood running down its face, and the glowing red eyes made it very clear that this was not a friendly Pokemon. Moro's song was the only thing that saved him and the other Pokemon from getting crushed under cement blocks. With the Pokemon unconcious, Jayce quickly ran in and found his both of his parent's bodies in the kitchen. He could only barely recognize them before he tripped backward and had to fight his heaving body. It was then that he heard his younger brother screaming for him. Bolting upstairs, he found Mark hiding under his bed. Yakul was standing in the room, and Mark originally thought he was infected too. After spending a few seconds convincing Mark that his own Pokemon were fine, they remembered that they needed to get going before that Conkeldurr woke back up. Shoving a few things they could think of into his backpack and a smaller bag for Mark, they quickly vacated the premises. They met up with Terry who had come back too, and since he couldn't find his parents at all, he decided to stick with Jayce and Mark. They weren't sure where to go, and with a lot of adults getting itchy trigger fingers, they didn't want to risk their Pokemon getting shot for no reason. So the three kids ran into the woods to try roughing it until... They never thought that far. They just wanted to survive, and without family to look for, they didn't see a need to go into the high population areas. Their first tragedy happened a few months in. They had found a small town that seemed mostly empty, and they had split up to search for easily scavangeable supplies. What they hadn't expected was that they were being hunted by undead bird Pokemon. Mark didn't have any Pokemon protecting him, and that made him an easy target for a Braviary to swoop in and pin him down. The boy didn't die on impact, but with the sharp claws and beak, he perished after letting out a high pitched scream. All Jayce could do was get Hana to drop a large stun spore cloud on the bird, and he screamed for Terry. The boys couldn't get near the bird, and even if Mark had anything they could have used, they couldn't look at the younger boy's body. Regret that they couldn't even give him a proper burial ate at them, but unable to go back, they had to go forward. Terry's Pignite started coughing in the middle of winter, and at first they thought that she was just getting sick from a cold. While that was still scary, they weren't prepared for just how quickly she started to go downhill. After a few days, she couldn't even get up, and her skin started to take on a purplish hue. None of them were sure what that meant, but she insisted that they needed to leave her immediately. Terry didn't want that, but she begged him to. They couldn't save her, and it would be agony to know they were in danger when she passed. Torn apart, they finally left her after Artemis told them to. Terry didn't know it, and Jayce wouldn't find out until much later, but Artemis had put the infected Pignite to rest. The pair of boys were barely functional at this point, and it was mostly thanks to Jayce's Pokemon that they were still able to keep going. Even if they couldn't communicate directly, the four Pokemon kept their humans alive by knowing how to find food without relying on humanity's resources. Jayce had to keep going because his friend and Pokemon needed or at least wanted him, but loss after traumatic loss was getting to him. When Terry died, he nearly jumped in after him. He and Terry had bolted across a broken down bridge, and Terry had misjudged just how big a hole was. The fall into the water didn't kill him, but the infected Basculin hiding in the river did. Jayce didn't even get to hear him scream before seeing blood and... other things float to the surface of the river. There was nothing left of his remaining human connection. That night, he didn't let go of Hana, and he buried his face into Moro when he went to sleep. Or at least tried to. Moro didn't get any sleep that night since she had to keep playing her song to make him stay asleep. Yakul and Artemis kept watch, but they still feared what would happen next. Not only was Jayce's mental state bad, theirs were on the line too. It felt like a godsend that they found Driftveil. The community offered safety and security that Jayce had only dreamed of in the last year. There was food, there were people who didn't shoot on sight, and there were strong people protecting them. After finally being able to get clean and attempt at sleep, it seemed like things were looking up. However, there was a disadvantage that Jayce nor his Pokemon could have forseen. Not many of the inhabitants wanted to act like the world had ended. The guards, scavengers, and the leader guy would at least address it, but any mentions of the hell that was out there were often shushed. Which meant that any of Jayce's traumas were completely ignored if they were ever brought up, and he started to resent a lot of the people there. A lot of the humans started to purposefully avoid him because he reminded them of bad things they didn't want to think on, and he holed up even more in his head. The only thing that got him out of that rut was seeing people like Cherry protect and provide for the community, and he decided he wanted to do that too. There were a few people he liked. Sure, he could do that for them. |
Accent | Likes peppering his sentences with swears. |
Appearance | Jayce is a scrawny teenager who keeps up with looking clean, but not necessarily keeping up with looking neat. His pink hair is permanently tousled and choppy from cutting it himself, and it hangs past his darker pink nearly red eyes. His light blue hoodie has seen better days, but he refuses to change it out just yet. Same with the black t-shirt he wears under it. He has changed out his jeans a few times due to too many holes making the last few unwearable. Normally wears tennis shoes for comfort and running around in. Unless he's specifically on guard or near the edges, he has a tendency to constantly have his earbuds in. He isn't always listening to music, but it keeps too many people from asking stupid questions. |
Religion | "If gods are real, then they should beg me for forgiveness" |
Personality | -Angry/bitter People blatantly trying to ignore the fact that he showed up near dead after watching most of his life fall apart has only made him resent a lot of the people there. -Looks up to the stronger people He truly wishes to be able to protect his Pokemon and the few people he gives a shit about, so he looks up to the guards who aren't jerks to him. -Listens to music to mitigate the trauma One of the few things he has in this world left is his phone that doubled as a music player, though he has picked up cds for a cd player that was scavenged at some point. Whenever the nightmares or his emotions get to be too much, he'll seclude himself so he can listen to music in peace. He feels like if he didn't have this outlet, then he would go mad. His Pokemon fear that if he didn't have it, he might let himself get killed. -Stubborn Doesn't change his mind easily and tends to hold onto grudges for a long time. -Protective He doesn't want to lose anyone else he cares for, ever, if he can help it. Even to his own detriment. -Prickly Also because of him trying to protect himself, he may push people away just so that he won't get hurt when they inevitably die. -Adventurous Before the epidemic, he was the first to check out new places and wanting to see new things -walks the line between brave and stupid Willing to throw hands to protect people, but doesn't really evaluate just how useful he would be in said confrontation. -Depressed as hell The fact that no one acknowledges his trauma isn't helping this either. He keeps wondering why he was the one to survive when he used to be the dumb kid who got in trouble. -Easy to piss off Thanks to all these issues culminating together, he can get angry really quickly over small matters. Usually his threshold for bullshit he's willing to deal with is entirely dependent on how much he likes the person. He will put up with a lot of nonsense from Cherry or Dazey. -Underneath the harsh exterior, he's a sweet kid He does like making other people happy and will do sweet gestures like giving them favorite candy that he found. It's just that the number of people he's willing to do this for has gotten a lot smaller. -Immature He's 13 -Loves music One of the few things that can make him happy even now, music is something that helps him ground himself and process his emotions in ways he can't manage with people. |
Affiliations | -Cherry - He looks up to her as she keeps the town safe and supplied, and he wants to be strong like her. |
