Hidden among the dewdrop-covered leaves and small rocks, two Pokemon crouched side-by-side, watching the group of four other Pokemon nearby. One of them, a tall Gallade, gulped nervously as he shuffled closer to his companion; an elegant Gardevoir. Her eyes, bright as cherry blossoms, were wide and curious at the sight of the fellow survivors, especially the powerful-looking Blaziken. The Gallade, on the other hand, narrowed his eyes and scowled at the group suspiciously before turning to the female.
"Zoe ... are you sure it's a good idea to approach those guys?" he asked, gesturing in particular to the Blaziken and strange-looking Fighting-type. "They look like they're about to start a fight. We don't want to be in the middle of that."
Zoe was quiet for a moment before replying in her serene, gentle voice, "I don't know, Jake, but I know one thing for sure: they're the only survivors we've found, and the only ones that we're likely to find. We can't just ignore them. This is our chance to obtain ourselves some allies."
"But we don't need allies! We've come all the way from Rustboro by ourselves and we managed all right." Jake lowered himself further down into the fern bush they were crouching in. "And besides ... they'll only slow us down. And they'd hog all the food we'd collect. And--"
"There's no need to be scared of them, Jake," said Zoe. Jake started to protest further but she silenced him by taking his hand. "Think about it. They're just like us: they're survivors. They'll probably be really relieved to see us."
"I don't know..."
"Jake." Zoe squeezed his hand tightly, her large eyes shining with gratitude. "I know you're protective of me, and I appreciate that. But this is an amazing chance. A chance that ultimately increases our chance for survival." She sighed when Jake continued to hesitate. "Look, I'll do all of the talking, all right? I'll let you watch my back just in case anything happens. All right?"
Knowing that she wasn't about to change her mind anytime, Jake sighed. He looked back to the group of squabbling Pokemon and then back to the Gardevoir. "All right."
Smiling and nodding gently, Zoe stood up, pulling Jake to his feet as well. Guiding him by the hand, she carefully stepped out of the bush and started to glide gracefully towards the group. She was nervous herself, but knew that Jake was worse due to his trembling hand. How alike to a child he was, even though they were practically the same age. Zoe was thankful to the legends for allowing her to live through this alongside him; without her he would be dead by now for sure; tortured by his regrets. Regrets that, no matter how many times she consoled him, he would never get over. But what else can I do...?
"Hello!" Zoe called cheerfully to the tensed-up group, raising her free hand into a little wave. She felt Jake start to stiffen a little and she gently but firmly pulled him forward. "We're terribly sorry for interrupting, but you are the first survivors we have met!" She took her first good look at the group. There was the Blaziken, whom had caught her eye immediately, a Raichu and two Pokemon whom were unfamiliar to her. "My name is Zoe, and this is my partner, Jake. Is..." She knew that Jake had sensed her tension because he moved closer to her, eyeing the group carefully. ...something the matter?"
