The sun was just starting to sink as it cast bright pockets of blinding light and shadow across the snow. The trees and hills did their best to soften its blaring gaze, but between it and the deep, freezing snow it was difficult to make any headway in the frozen land. A pair of Meowth's were weaving their way slowly through the forest, clearly misplaced and disorientated. The male had taken the lead and kept his head low to the ground to protect it from wind chill, but every now and then he would raise it high and look further ahead.
Still nothing? Beyond him he can see nothing but trees and snow, a mix of dark brown, white, and green. Surely there had to be something else out here.
A breeze whipped forward, tossing white flecks at the male Meowth's face before he could shield himself. A harsh shiver ran down the length of his spine, a snowflake landing right on his nose and melting before he could swipe it away.
"Sure is cold, ey Clovie?" He breathes lightly, tossing a glance back at his sister. It was cold the day before when they arrived here. It was freezing by the next morning, let alone after their trek throughout the day. The female only gave a low moan, her hobbling steps ever following her brother.
"Im shocked," he gasped, slowing his pace to catch his breath.
"We should of hit a settlement by now." It didn't matter if it was human or Pokemon, they had barely seen hide or hair of another creature aside from the stray undead.
The female moved much slower, her steps labored and uneven as she came closer and closer to him. She couldn't quite feel the cold but it pulled and dragged at her body. Everything seemed heavy and slow, the haze that surrounded her thoughts and vision growing thicker and thicker.
"Rrroooww..." she wheezes as her limbs finally give in to Kolven's exhausting pace. Slumping against the next tree that she passed Clover's pelt rubs against its bark as she falls and its dark flecks shower her pelt.
"Clovie!" Kolven gasps, springing toward her like a snowshoe hare in a sudden burst of panic.
"Clover, you alright? Need to stop?" Worry edges his mew as the cat comes close to check her over. Clover's head shifts, her good eye forcing itself to focus on the other Pokemon.
"T..tired.." The single word was a struggle but it was enough to convey her needs.
Kolven was panting, the surge of panic too much on his weary frame. With a deep breathe he smothers his fears, forcing a smile to weakly spread across his cheeks.
"Just hang in there, alright? I'll find us somewhere to stop for the day, promise! By tomorrow we'll be out of this snow." Pressing his face into her cheek, and ignoring the bitter cold of her pelt, the male turns and starts to head off into the trees.
"I just need you to stay there, okay Clovie? Can you stay put for me? I'll be right back but I need you to stay here." Kolven prayed repeating his request would help it get to her and, as Clover's head slumped back onto her paws, he assumed he succeeded. He took a few more steps forward and was shocked by how well her pelt melted into the snow. The dark, dirty patches of soil under the tree matched that of her pelt, and if you weren't looking you'd almost miss the downed undead.
Trying to get bearings on his direction Kolven tore off into the trees, looking for anywhere, anything the cats' could use to bed down in.
Pokemon live everywhere. There has to be something out here. If he could find a burrow, or a nest, or a--
"Mew have mercy," he exclaims while coming to a sudden halt. Was that a cabin, or a cottage of some sort?
"What are the chances.." Not wanting to waste time or look a gift Ponyta in the mouth he charged forward, slowing only when he noticed the thin, fresh wisps of smoke coming from the structure.
"..There's someone there." Had he found other Pokemon? A cold stone sinks through his bones into the pit of his stomach. Others weren't usually the kindest to his sister.
But I don't have a choice. She needed this, she
needed this.
Continuing his race forward the cat stopped a few feet short, catching his breath as best he could before making a slow approach. Whoever they were he doubted they would appreciate him barging in. Standing outside the door he tapped it gently with one paw.
"H-hello?" He called not too loudly, praying for a response.
"If anyone's there, I.. I hate to be a burden but my sister and I desperately need somewhere to rest.. We promise to leave your home in the morning!" Hunching out of exhaustion and not disrespect the feline pauses to breathe. Legends, he really needed to stop too.
"Please.." He wheezed, orange eyes bright and hopeful beyond their exhaustion. Legends knew how long it'd take him to find somewhere else.
((Sorry for the delay and length! This came out a lot longer than I expected aha.))
