History | Many people know about the Lake of Rage and the infamous red Gyarados that terrorized the area, but what they don't know is that there was another shiny Gyarados. However, unlike the well-known one, Thorn fought the influence of the radio waves and dove to the bottom of the lake, where he coiled around the eggs at the bottom and refused to move while his brethren raged. For what felt like weeks, he fought off any Gyarados that threatened to destroy the eggs in their mindless rampages. Eventually, the annoying headache stopped, and he realized that the rest of the Gyarados calmed down. He was glad that he could finally relax and talk with his friends again, but he was still wary because of how suddenly this Rage happened. Unfortunately, many trainers saw this as an opportunity to catch themselves a powerful Pokemon since most of the Gyarados were exhausted from non-stop attacking. At some point, he tried to save one of the younger Gyarados, one that had been forcibly evolved far too young, and his appearance made all of the trainers run in terror. They thought that the original one was back. He noticed this and made a point to let humans see him so that his brethren could recover, but he didn't attack unless he needed to. He kept the ruse going even after they recovered to discourage excessive Magikarp fishing. Eventually, an experienced trainer who happened to be passing through saw him and was entranced with his beauty and power. He was exactly what she needed on her team. She let out her Feraligatr, Kale, to try and convince the shiny to join their team. Thorn was actually impressed that this trainer chose to ask him instead of forcing him and considered the offer. He loved the Lake dearly, but a trainer could offer him the ability to fight without having to kill his opponents. Also, most of the children of the lake had grown distant from him, despite his best efforts to befriend them and keep them safe. Kale told Thorn about the adventures he had with his trainer and eventually convinced Thorn to join. At first, it seemed like he was only there to ferry the trainer around, but after several tragedies, he started becoming a powerhouse that she relied on. Ryan's and Serena's brutal deaths showed him that some trainers go to far, and he sought to protect his little family. He figuratively looked up to Kale and how he fought with intensity and grace. He appreciated Melody's unusual methods and her motherly tendencies. Omar was strange, but they could take a hit and were loyal to a fault. Lastly, his trainer clearly loved all of her Pokemon. Each time something bad happened, she would always make sure they were okay first. Even though she felt the losses keenly she was a strong presence for her Pokemon. To help fill the gaps in the team, the trainer brought in some younger Pokemon that she had been holding on to. They were Theodora the Swinub and Newton the Eevee. She brought Thorn to help train since he was still a little behind the others, and he obviously loved kids. They went to Cianwood to train, and a Gloom was one of the first things they encountered. The trainer kept Thorn in his pokeball so he wouldn't scare off wild pokemon, and he didn't see what happened in the battle. All he knew was that when he came out, his trainer was crying while she held a suspiciously still Theodora, and a wild Gloom with blood everywhere approaching Newton. He coiled his tail protectively around his trainer and used Ice Fang. Normally, he only bit hard enough to make it hurt, but he grabbed the Gloom and crushed it. Thorn was grateful that Newton had shut his eyes prior to Thorn's attack so that he did not have to see the brutality of it. After spitting out the remains into the ocean, Thorn lowered his head down to the little Eevee. "Don't worry, I got rid of the big baddie," he consoled. Newton then sobbed as he ran towards Thorn and cried into the red scales. Thorn kept watch while the two grieved, and eventually, the trainer recovered enough to head back to the Pokemon center. Theodora was given a proper funeral, and the trainer decided to head to Ecruteak City. There she picked up Integra, a Dratini from Blackthorne, and decided to give everyone a vacation. Newton took advantage that he had a red Gyarados as his "big brother," and often played on the sea serpent. Integra was intimidated by Thorn despite everyone's claim that he was a gentle giant, but seeing the little Eevee so carefree around Thorn alleviated some of her fears. She even joined some of Newton's games after a time. Kale, Omar, and Melody often supervised and made sure the young ones didn't convince Thorn to do something foolish. The trainer would sometimes join in the games as well when she wasn't off doing something in the towers. After one such day, Newton glowed brightly. After the light faded, he had short, lilac fur, huge ears, and a red gem on his forehead. Everyone, especially Thorn, was proud of him. The trainer then asked Newton if he wanted to start properly training, and he responded eagerly in the affirmative. She decided to go to the nearby Mt. Mortar cave. This time, she brought everyone since caves could be dangerous in varying ways. Integra sat out all of the battles since she was still nervous about fighting, and Newton found that he could handle a lot of the Pokemon there. Thorn's guard went down as Newton continued to handle himself well, and even allowed himself to wait in the pools as the team went forward. However, several of the local Pokemon were peeved that a snot-nosed brat with some power was able to take them out. Several Graveler and Geodude managed to situate themselves around the cave without the trainer or any of the pokemon noticing, and then they all used Self-destruct. Integra was already safe inside her pokeball as was Melody. Kale grabbed the trainer to shield her while Omar and Newton took the brunt of the explosion. They were all sent flying towards Thorn, who was outside of the blast radius. Kale, Omar, and the trainer were banged up, but alive. Newton wasn't moving. Thorn bent his head down to take a closer look and realized that Newton's limbs and head were bent at unnatural angles. He was dead. Something snapped in Thorn's mind at that point, and he started seeing red. He saw the pokemon responsible for the explosion and rushed towards them with speed almost unimaginable for a creature his size. His attack brought water with him as he charged, and his fangs became icy. As water flooded the area, he snapped at the rock types and crushed them. As he continued to rampage, he saw a group of Machoke dragging a sobbing Tyrogue away from what appeared to be a dead trainer. The crying inciting him further, he rushed towards the group and proceeded to slam the creatures with his entire body. He pointedly avoided the small Tyrogue as he smashed them into the walls with his tail. The Tyrogue started screaming, "STOP, PLEASE!" Melody, released from her ball to help move everyone, found Thorn on the ground near the Tyrogue, and both were sobbing. Thorn was mourning Newton, and the realization that he was just as savage as his species indicated. Melody returned Thorn to his pokeball, and asked the Tyrogue if he wished to come along. He agreed, and Melody brought him to her trainer who was still nursing everyone's injuries. Melody just had to look at the trainer, and the trainer knew Thorn was in a bad place in his mind. The Tyrogue put himself in one of the spare pokeballs, and the trainer returned Omar and Kale. Melody carried her out, and they went back to Ecruteak. Melody retrieved Newton's body later, and Kale buried it. This new low for the team almost broke them. Everyone was listless, and the trainer even told them that they were welcome to leave. Integra and Steve, the Tyrogue from the cave, however, didn't believe that they should give up yet. They wanted to see the land of Johto, and they knew about the trainer's dream of challenging the Champion. The Trainer had an idea, and after yanking off one of Thorn's scales, she sent Melody to take it somewhere. Eventually, Melody came back with a strange device. "This is to make training the little ones safer," she informed the party. She put it on Steve's head first since he was the weakest. Then she went to Thorn and explained the situation. He seemed intrigued at the idea of training the younger ones in a safer manner, but Newton's loss weighed heavily on him. Once he realized Steve and Integra wanted to train with or without him, though, he decided to keep going. The Experience share meant that the trainer could focus on training Thorn while getting the younger ones to higher levels safely. This time, they headed to the Tohjo falls area and Thorn flourished. He soon caught up with Kale, Melody, and Omar, and eventually, Integra and Steve were able to train on their own. After months of training, Steve evolved into a Hitmonchan, and Integra evolved into a Dragonair. After about a year, everyone was ready to challenge some of the strongest trainers in the area. Everyone did well as they fought, but Thorn, Kale, and Omar stood out. One trainer had a Gengar that seemed to be bad news. Melody sensed that the Gengar had a malevolent aura about it, and tried to warn the trainer, who had just sent out Kale. Kale, confident in his abilities, was able to land a critical Crunch, but the Gengar had the last laugh. It did something to Kale as it faded away that left him dead on the ground. Thorn almost lunged at the Gengar's trainer as they laughed about how they tricked he Trainer into killing one of her Pokemon. This time, however, it was Melody who went first. Losing Ryan had been difficult for her, but Kale was her best friend. She used Zen Headbutt against them, and then left them there. Thorn picked up Kale's body, and the small team had another unofficial funeral. Immediately after this, a Dragon Tamer found the Trainer and demanded a battle. He didn't think that she had the abilities to be a trainer if one of her Pokemon just died in a relatively safe battle. He sent out a Dragonite, and the Trainer sent out Steve. The Dragonite used Dragon Rush, and almost took Steve out. However, he landed an ice punch, which knocked it out. Thorn and Omar jumped in immediately to protect Steve from further attack, and the Dragon Tamer backed off. This victory was unfortunately short lived as a Pokemon epidemic broke out. The Trainer tried to keep her five Pokemon safe from the undead and the military, but she was eventually found out. Her pokeballs were snatched from her, and the militants tried to euthanize the pokemon. Thorn took out the squad while his friends got away, but he couldn't keep up with the flying Pokemon. Melody had made sure to grab Steve, and Integra dragged Omar along. Thorn eventually found the ocean and just kept going. He was able to kill most undead he encountered with ease, but living pokemon tended to avoid him. He became rather lonely, and decided to try and find his friends. He hoped that they were still alive even after the years started passing. |
Appearance | Gyarados is a serpentine Chinese dragon-like Pokémon. It is mostly blue, with a yellow underbelly and yellow spots along its body. It has a three-pointed, dark blue crest on its head and four white fins down its back. Its mouth is very large and gaping, bearing four canine teeth. It has one barbel on each side of its face. The barbels are white on a female and the same color as the main body on a male. Thorn is a shiny Gyarados with ruby red coloration instead of the typical blue. His scales bear the scratches and dents of battles past, but he manages not to look tattered. If he were humanoid, one would say that he carries himself in a confident slouch. He knows his strengths and weaknesses, but he doesn't try to lord his power and size over others. |
Personality | Thorn is extremely chill for his species. He loves trainer battles or other competitions for fun, but that's as far as he is willing to go when it comes to fighting. He prefers to chat with his fellow Pokemon to resolve disagreements. He can be a bit of a pushover when it comes to resolving conflicts to avoid unnecessary bloodshed. If attacked, he will retaliate with a powerful move, but will not push it. If a Pokemon attacks him to kill, he will respond in kind but still lacking the viciousness Gyarados are known for. He has the patience of a saint especially when it comes to children. He is an amiable sort and would like to make friends with those he meets, though the epidemic has made him wary of strangers. Despite his easygoing personality, his species' infamous ferocity can come out if he is mentally or emotionally traumatized. He will not remember what happens during these priods of time, and he will brutalize whatever prompted his anger and anyone that he thought helped them. More often than not, this means he kills them. Newton's death is currently the only thing that has triggered this. |
User Notes | - Based on my Gyarados and my headcannons from my Soul Silver Nuzlocke -The named pokemon without a species attached to them were: Ryan (Raticate), Serena(Nidorina), Melody (Noctowl), and Omar (Magneton) -Some events were altered to make more sense to EJ canon -He is named after Thorn from the Eragon series, but that is where any similarities end. -Can spend brief amounts of time out of the water, but prefers not to. -Extremely protective of children. Think of the Mama Bear trope, but it's a giant sea serpent. -His greatest fear is that he'll lose himself to rage. The Epidemic's effect on Pokemon means he is terrified of getting infected. |
